On 26 May, the National Assembly adopted fast-tracked amendments to the Parliamentary Inquiry Act, removing the possibility for those subject to a parliamentary inquiry to challenge the inquiry before the Constitutional Court before it begins. Under the amended law, only the Judicial Council and the Prosecutor General may request such a review, while a new judicial remedy allows those under investigation to seek judicial redress only after the inquiry has concluded. Slovenia's Human Rights Ombudswoman warned that the changes weaken existing legal protections, while media freedom watchdogs argued they reduce safeguards against politically motivated investigations and risk allowing parliamentarians to access a journalist’s messages and confidential sources without prior judicial oversight. Following the law's adoption, citizens launched a campaign to trigger a national referendum on its repeal, with organizers given until 14 July to collect the required 40,000 signatures.
