Qatar - September 2025

On 9 September, Israel carried out an unprecedented airstrike in Doha, attempting to kill senior officials from the Palestinian organisation Hamas as they met to discuss a new Gaza ceasefire proposal presented by the United States. The strike killed six people, including five non-senior Hamas members and a Qatari security officer. Qatar condemned the attack as a violation of its sovereignty and international law and announced a temporarily suspension of its mediation role in the Gaza ceasefire talks. 

*Since the impact of these events are felt primarily in Qatar, they are coded in the entries for the latter. While they are not coded for Israel, it is Israeli action that causes the effects on democracy in Qatar.
