Enhanced militarization of public security is approved by Congress
Mexican Congress approved a reform through which the National Guard is to be placed under the control of the Ministry of Defense. The reform further cements the already prominent role of the armed forces in public security in Mexico. The legislation has been condemned by UN and civil society groups, claiming this is a step backwards for public security and raising concerns over additional human rights violations and impunity in the country.
