Labour Party wins fourth term following snap parliamentary elections
On 30 May, snap parliamentary elections were held, with the Labour Party (PL) coming in first with 51.8 per cent of the vote, securing a fourth consecutive term and winning 36 seats in Parliament. The Nationalist Party (PN) came in second with 44.7 per cent of the vote, winning 31 seats. Under Malta’s gender quota (introduced in 2021 to ensure at least 40 per cent representation of each gender in Parliament by adding up to 12 extra seats when one gender is underrepresented), the composition of Parliament was expanded from 67 to 79 seats, as only 15 women had been elected (22.3 per cent). The additional 12 seats were allocated equally between the two parties, increasing the number of women MPs to 27 (34.2 per cent). Voter turnout stood at 87.5 per cent, up from 85.6 per cent in the latest 2022 election, and in line with the country’s traditionally high levels of electoral participation.
