Libyan parties commit to elections within 24 months under new UN-facilitated agreement
On 30 August, representatives of Libya’s rival political institutions signed a United Nations-facilitated agreement aimed at overcoming the institutional and legal obstacles that have delayed national elections. The agreement provides for the reconstitution of the High National Elections Commission’s Board of Commissioners and the holding of presidential and legislative elections under a single executive authority within 24 months. If endorsed by the House of Representatives and the High Council of State and subsequently implemented, the agreement could help break Libya’s prolonged electoral deadlock and pave the way for long-delayed national elections.
