Kuwait restricts political rights of naturalized citizens
On 23 August, a decree-law amending Kuwait’s nationality legislation entered into force, removing the political rights of naturalized citizens. Under the new provisions, individuals who acquired Kuwaiti citizenship through naturalization are no longer permitted to vote, stand for election, or be appointed to representative bodies. Previously, naturalized citizens could obtain voting rights after a qualifying period. The reform follows a broader tightening of nationality policies in the country, including increased reviews and revocations of citizenship and amendments to the nationality framework.
