General and Regional Elections result in re-election of incumbent president
On 1 September, Guyana held General and Regional Elections for the offices of the President, all members of the National Assembly and members of the Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs). President Irfaan Ali of the People's Progressive Party (PPP) was re-elected and the PPP won 36 of the 65 seats in parliament. The recently formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party came in second, obtaining 16 seats in the National Assembly. The traditional opposition, the Partnership for National Unity (APNU), won 12 seats—a significant drop from its previous 31. Voter turnout was 58.4 per cent, down from 72.6 per cent in the previous election. Women’s representation in parliament will be 36.9 per cent, down from 39.4 per cent. International observers reported a peaceful and orderly election, acknowledging the efforts made to enhance the efficiency of the electoral process. They further noted opportunities for improvement in areas such as communication, access to public information, equitable access to media coverage and campaign regulation.
