Cameroon - March 2026
Parliament further extends its mandate amid election delays
On 23 March, the National Assembly voted to extend its mandate by nine months, from 31 March until 20 December 2026, in order to postpone parliamentary elections. It is the second postponement of the elections, which were originally scheduled to take place in 2025. Government authorities justified the measure as being necessary to align the electoral calendar and manage upcoming political processes. However, the decision raised concerns about electoral timeliness and democratic accountability, as citizens will continue to be represented by a parliament whose mandate has twice been prolonged, rather than renewed through elections.
