Botswana revives long-awaited collective bargaining council
In December, local media reported the registration of the Public Service Bargaining Council (PSBC), marking the long-awaited revival of this collective bargaining platform, which is intended to facilitate negotiations between the government and public sector unions. The PSBC was deregistered in 2017 following a breakdown in relations between the government and the unions and, despite promises from subsequent administrations, it has until now remained dissolved. This left Botswana’s public sector without a collective bargaining council, hindering the ability of the government and unions to resolve disputes. The return of the PSBC was widely welcomed as an important step towards restoring trust and stability to labour relations.
