Parliament approves nationality law amendment expanding revocation grounds
On 24 December, Parliament approved a bill amending the nationality law that expands the grounds for revoking Algerian citizenship. A key provision allows the state to strip citizenship, including from citizens by birth, if a person is considered to have seriously harmed national security or the State’s ‘vital interests, unity, or stability’. Citizenship may also be revoked if a person is accused of showing loyalty to a foreign power or of supporting organisations designated as terrorist or subversive. The authorities say the reforms are meant to protect national sovereignty. Rights groups, however, warn that the law uses broad and unclear terms, creating legal uncertainty and increasing the risk of political abuse. They caution that this could further entrench a pattern in which the government has repressed its critics, including dissidents and members of the diaspora. The bill is awaiting enactment.
