President Guillermo Lasso to face impeachment proceedings
Ecuador’s Constitutional Court determined the admissibility of an impeachment request endorsed by the opposition against President Guillermo Lasso, for alleged corruption and crimes against state security. A majority of six of the nine justices determined the admissibility of the request regarding the crime of embezzlement. Lasso will now face impeachment proceedings in the National Assembly, where a two-thirds majority would have to vote in favour of impeachment for him to be removed from office. The opposition’s request followed a newspaper’s investigation into an alleged scheme of corruption related to the allocation of jobs in State enterprises, and allegedly involving the President’s brother-in-law.
