Ukraine - 2015 - Political Finance Reforms - Magnus Ohman
Magnus Ohman has worked on anti-corruption and political finance issues in more than 50 countries since the 1990s, specializing in effective disclosure and oversight, sustainable solutions for transparency and accountability, and reducing abuse of state resources and political corruption. He has researched both country and macro-level trends and practices and assisted legislators, oversight institutions, civil society, media outlets, and political parties. He has supported efforts to increase political finance integrity in Ukraine since 2012.
In this recording Magnus Ohman reflects on strengthening financial transparency and accountability in Ukraine following the Euromaidan protests of 2013-2014. He discusses the political finance reforms introduced in 2015 to reduce the influence of oligarchs and emphasizes how political finance is an essential part of election assistance. Ohman highlights the collaboration between IFES, Ukrainian institutions, civil society, and media. More specifically, he discusses the establishment of the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption and how donor coordination can support democracy. Despite the challenges posed by the Russian war against Ukraine and the difficulties safeguarding democratic institutions in Ukraine, Ohman remains optimistic and looks forward to the day when we can fully support Ukrainian stakeholders.
