Women are often marginalised from decision-making in conflict and transitional contexts. Despite evidence that women’s presence and participation lead to better and longer lasting outcomes for peace, they remain underrepresented in transitional governments and peacebuilding bodies.

Over the past decade, information integrity has emerged as a cornerstone of healthy democracies, underpinning public trust, accountable governance and meaningful citizen participation. As digital spaces have become increasingly polluted by disinformation and fake content, exacerbated by the rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence, societies face growing challenges in distinguishing fact from fiction.

This policy paper examines the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on information integrity in electoral contexts across Latin America. Drawing on case studies from Brazil’s and Mexico’s 2024 elections, it analyses how AI tools are used to create, curate and moderate political content online, with particular attention to their effects on marginalized groups such as women, Indigenous communities and LGBTQIA+ individuals.
