International IDEA is committed to ensuring that gender equality is attained in democracy building. For democratic institutions and processes to have integrity and respond to the interests of all citizens, they must be inclusive of the plurality of groups in society.

By transforming unequal power relations, democracy promotes the equal distribution of power and influence between men and women. Central to the pursuit of democracy are policies and practices that seek to increase the participation, representation and leadership and decision making of women in politics, and reduce inequalities between men and women in all spheres of life.
