Sweden EU Presidency and the Democracy Agenda

With the support of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and on the occasion of Sweden’s 2023 Presidency of the Council of the EU, International IDEA led an analysis of the EU’s external democracy policy. To support the EU defending and promoting democracy , the project team formulated strategic and practical recommendations to enhance EU policymaking and implementation on external democracy matters. This included making the EU narrative on democracy fit for the new geopolitical reality. The project’s recommendations stem from consultations with civil society from  several world regions and with EU institutional and EU Member States officials.
