International IDEA and Luxembourg strengthen their partnership for democracy
Luxembourg has been a Member State of International IDEA since 2018 and served as Chair of the Council of Member States in 2024, combining political leadership with programmatic support for democracy in some of the most demanding contexts of our time. The new Framework, the Institute's first multi-year core partnership agreement with Luxembourg, places this collaboration on a predictable, long-term footing, in line with Luxembourg's sustained commitment for democracy and multilateralism.
The Framework's flexible core funding will allow International IDEA to direct resources where they are most needed in defence of democracy around the world.
"At a moment when democratic institutions are under unprecedented strain, Luxembourg's support sends a clear signal that defending democracy remains a shared global priority," said Dr. Kevin Casas-Zamora, Secretary-General of International IDEA. "Flexible, predictable partnerships of this kind are vital to respond to the threats democracies face today. We are grateful for Luxembourg's confidence and look forward to deepening our work together in the years ahead."
“For Luxembourg, this strengthened partnership with International IDEA is both timely and deliberate. It reinforces our role as a committed actor in defending democracy, while anchoring our development cooperation more firmly in the support of inclusive and resilient democratic institutions as an enabler of sustainable development.” said H.E. Henri Schumacher, Ambassador of Luxembourg to Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway. “International IDEA has long been a trusted and valued partner in this regard, and the new Framework agreement provides the foundation for a more strategic and impactful collaboration in the face of increasing global challenges to democratic governance worldwide.”
