The Inclusive Lesotho – Election Cycle Support Project marked a major milestone with the inauguration of its Project Steering Committee (PSC), the principal governance and oversight body guiding the EU-funded initiative.

Implemented by International IDEA in partnership with UNDP and funded by the European Union Delegation in Lesotho, the four-year project aims to strengthen political participation, inclusion, and electoral integrity in Lesotho. It focuses on enhancing citizens’ engagement—particularly women, youth, persons with disabilities, LGBTIQ+ persons, and other marginalised groups while improving transparency and accountability within the political system.

The PSC, co-chaired by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and International IDEA, will ensure strategic direction, coordination, and quality assurance for the project. It brings together key national institutions, civil society, and development partners to align efforts with Lesotho’s National Strategic Development Plan and recommendations from the EU Election Observation Mission.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting, Gram Matenga, Regional Head of Programmes for Africa and West Asia at International IDEA, emphasised that the PSC’s formation “embodies a shared commitment to inclusive governance and stronger democratic institutions.” He noted that the committee will play a pivotal role in monitoring progress, mobilising resources, and ensuring accountability across all components of the project.

The Inclusive Lesotho Project is built around three core objectives:

  1. Strengthening citizens’ participation and inclusion through civic education, voter awareness, and targeted support for vulnerable groups.

  2. Enhancing electoral transparency through CSO and media monitoring and reporting.

  3. Promoting internal democracy and gender equality within political parties.

Current activities include revising the civic education curriculum in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the National Curriculum Development Centre, developing a long-term civic and voter education strategy with the IEC, and supporting civil society advocacy to eliminate barriers to political participation.

The PSC will convene biannually to review progress, approve annual work plans, and provide strategic guidance. It will also ensure the integration of human rights, gender equality, and conflict sensitivity in all project activities.

With its establishment, the PSC lays a strong foundation for a coordinated, transparent, and inclusive implementation, helping Lesotho build a more participatory democracy and a resilient electoral system.

The Inclusive Lesotho – Election Cycle Support Project, running from 2025 to 2029, is part of the EU’s commitment to supporting democratic governance and inclusive development in Lesotho.
