The general election on 9 September 2018 in Sweden will mark a decisive moment in the country’s polling history. Beyond the political implications, the country’s electoral process is facing an important litmus test for the quality of Sweden’s democracy.

A delegation of 15 young Zimbabwean leaders visited International IDEA’s Stockholm headquarters on 20 August to discuss the state of Zimbabwean democracy, the recent elections and the prospects for Zimbabwe’s youth in the future.

At a Meeting of Representatives of International IDEA Member States in Brussels, participants engaged in an interactive debate on the role of the European Union in a changing geo-political landscape and the future of liberal democracy. In Brussels, the European Commission has started the process of preparing for the next European Union (EU) Multi-annual Financial Framework (EU MFF 2021-2027) or simply called the EU Budget, with the release of its proposal for a,“budget for the future”¹, on 02 May 2018. In accordance with the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty, the European Commission proposed, and the European Council and European Parliament approve the EU budget.

What does the future hold for citizen participation? This is what European leaders came to talk about in Milan, Italy on Monday, 5 February 2018. At the European Open Government Leaders’ Forum, co-organized by the Open Government Partnership and the government of Italy, a mix of government ministers, civil society leaders and international organizations gathered to analyse the decline of citizen participation. 

On 11 January, International IDEA and the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) organized a joint event to familiarize participants - from the MFA Diplomatic Training Program and the European Diplomatic Programme (Croatia, EU delegation)—with the key concepts, opportunities and challenges involved in the democracy support and electoral assistance agenda.
