International IDEA unequivocally condemns the attempted coup in the Republic of Benin on 7 December, which sought to subvert the constitutional order and undermine the democratic will of the people. A Member State of International IDEA, Benin has long been recognized as one of Africa’s most long-standing democracies, and any effort to take power outside constitutional means constitutes a direct assault on that legacy.

From 1-5 December, the National Assembly of Benin concluded a rich and forward-looking study visit to the Parliamentary Institute of the Czech Chamber of Deputies, organized under the Inter Pares | Parliaments in Partnership programme.
On 15–16 October, around 50 experts and practitioners from across the world met in Stockholm for the Global Expert Meeting on Protecting Elections, hosted by International IDEA with the support of the Government of Canada. Over two days, representatives of electoral management bodies, regional electoral networks, and government institutions from more than 15 countries discussed experiences and ways forward for the International IDEA’s Integrated Framework for Protecting Elections.
Electoral integrity is increasingly challenged in both transitional and well-established democracies. Challenges combine complex environments in which elections take place and the ever-present complexities of election preparation.
