Support to Inclusive Political Participation and Representation in Lesotho

Inaugural Project Steering Committee meeting in Lesotho, November 2025.
Lesotho has taken an important step toward deepening democratic inclusion with the launch of the Inclusive Lesotho – Election Cycle Support Project, a four-year initiative funded by the European Union and implemented by International IDEA in partnership with UNDP Lesotho and national institutions.

The project aims to enhance participation and inclusion in the political system while strengthening the administration of elections. It focuses on ensuring that all Basotho, especially women, youth, persons with disabilities, and other marginalised groups, can actively and meaningfully take part in the democratic process.

Lesotho’s young and diverse population faces significant barriers to participation, including low voter turnout, limited access to civic education, and underrepresentation of vulnerable groups in political spaces. These challenges have contributed to public disillusionment and weakened trust in institutions. The Inclusive Lesotho Project directly addresses these issues by embedding civic education in schools and communities, supporting long-term voter education, and empowering citizens to engage in political life with confidence and awareness.

The project also seeks to strengthen the capacity of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to deliver transparent and inclusive elections and enhance the role of civil society and the media in monitoring electoral integrity. By improving oversight and promoting accountability, it aims to make transparency and inclusion systemic features of Lesotho’s democratic landscape.

At its core, the project recognises that inclusive participation and credible elections are essential for national stability, legitimacy, and development. Through civic education, dialogue, and collaboration, the Inclusive Lesotho Project will help shape a more participatory democracy, one that reflects the voices, needs, and aspirations of all Basotho.
