Statement on Venezuela: Time to restore democracy

January 05, 2026

International IDEA voices its utmost concern regarding the military intervention of January 3rd in Venezuela and calls for the respect of international law and the principles embedded in the UN Charter. We urge all parties involved to forge a peaceful and genuinely democratic solution to the crisis.

In line with our mandate to strengthen democracy around the globe, International IDEA expresses its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and calls for the restoration of their democratic will suppressed for many years under President Nicolas Maduro.

It was precisely the disrespect for the 2024 electoral result that deepened the country’s political crisis. With the firm conviction that only democracy can support lasting peace and development, we reiterate the need to respect the will of the people as expressed at the ballot box in 2024 and resume democratic processes.

International IDEA reiterates its call to the Venezuelan government to fully guarantee the fundamental rights of its citizens, including the right to free and fair elections, as well as peaceful association. The Institute reaffirms its willingness to collaborate with all actors, national and international, to contribute to a democratic, inclusive, and sustainable solution that responds to the aspirations of the Venezuelan people.
