Democratic Elections for Resolution of Crisis in Belarus

Date
01 June 2021 - 02 June 2021
Location
Online Event

Pro-democracy forces in Belarus continue to demand the holding of early elections as a way out of the current crisis. We at International IDEA are honored to be co-organizers of the conference Democratic Elections for Resolution of Crisis in Belarus, 1-2 June 2021 convened by the Office of Sviatlana Tikhanouskaya.

The conference will discuss the ongoing political situation, conditions that should be put in place to organize early elections as well as the agenda of a longer-term electoral reform.

The purpose of the conference is to bring together Belarusian and international experts on elections to discuss ideas for holding early elections as a means to ending the political crisis in Belarus. In spring 2021, almost 800,000 Belarusian citizens took part in an online survey to express their support for negotiations leading to early elections and a number of international actors have supported the idea of resolving the crisis through an election. The speakers of the conference will consider possible ways to establish a dialogue between the society and the current authorities of Belarus in order to create conditions for early elections, ways to hold such elections and achieve the long-term goal – fundamental electoral reform in Belarus, including the adoption of a new electoral code.
