Webinar: Presenting Findings of Fact Sheets on Gender Social Norms and Women’s Political Participation and Representation
The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) is organising a second webinar under the Women and Youth Democratic Engagement (WYDE) – Women’s Leadership Initiative, funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented in partnership with UN Women, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), under the overall coordination and leadership of UN Women.

This webinar will present and discuss a series of thematic fact sheets that explore how social norms influence women’s political participation and representation. The fact sheets draw on insights and evidence generated through WYDE interventions such as regional and intergenerational dialogues, young women’s empowerment academies, male and media/journalists practitioners engagement on transformation of social norms, and contributions from the iKNOW Politics platform and partners.

The webinar will focus on three thematic areas:

  1. Fact Sheet on the Role of political parties in promoting young women’s political participation and representation – which accesses the gender social norms in sample political party policies and practices across the globe, political party conduct throughout the electoral cycle, demographics of the political parties disaggregated by age and gender, political party finance distribution by age and gender, political party structure that promote gender equality, and recommend areas of influence for young women in politics within the political parties. The Fact Sheet recommends good practices for political parties to promote young women’s political participation and representation.
  2. Fact Sheet on the Role of Media on Women’s Political Participation and Representation – which analyses statistics of women sources in political reporting, gender responsive reporting in media, capacity building of media practitioners and good practices building on the International IDEA WYDE media seminar outcomes.
  3. Fact sheet onAccess, Participation, Representation and Transformation approach for women’s political participation and representation – which explores national/regional/global policies, practices and those of political parties, parliaments and election management bodies that influence women’s participation and representation is politics, leadership and decision making at all levels. The Fact Sheet analyses the gender social norms that promote young women’s political participation and representation.

The webinar aims to:

  • Validate key findings, case studies, and recommendations.
  • Exchange regional and country-level practices on transforming gender social norms.
  • Identify emerging trends and shared priorities.
  • Inform future advocacy and programming under the WYDE initiative.

The webinar will bring together women in politics, media practitioners/journalists, male gender equality advocates/practitioners and CSOs, mostly those who have participated/engaged in WYDE activities.
