The sixty-fifth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will take place from 15 to 26 March 2021. This concept note outlines the need for the Women in Political Participation in Africa Barometer validation ahead of the launch of the Barometer on 18 March 2021. The practice of recalling elected representatives during their term of office is both topical and controversial within the context of democratic governance across the globe. On the one hand, recall can be an instrument to ensure adequate representation of the elected, but on the other hand, it can be weaponised to undermine democratic representation.
The Global Peace Index is the flagship annual report produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP). This year’s report is the 14th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI), which ranks 163 independent states and territories according to their relative levels of peacefulness. The GPI is the world’s leading measure of global peacefulness.
Malawi held fresh Presidential elections following a Constitutional Court order of the 3rd of February 2020 that nullified the Presidential election that had been held on the 21st of May 2019, which decision was upheld by the Supreme Court of Appeal on the 8th of May 2020. A new Commission was appointed on the 7th of June 2020, and conducted the fresh presidential election on the 23rd of June 2020.
The purpose of the webinar, organized by International IDEA Africa and West Asia Programme, is to create a virtual platform for dialogue and experience-sharing on how parliamentary democracy can be preserved and how parliaments can take the lead in ensuring oversight of the extended emergency powers of the Executive, and be the true reflection of citizens’ voices on matters pertaining to the handling of the pandemic in their countries.
