Rethinking Democracy, Media and Socialization in Africa
This policy brief emphasizes the importance of strengthening democratic culture in Africa through media, education and institutional reforms, with a focus on combating misinformation, enhancing civic engagement and supporting independent journalism.
It advocates for a multi-layered approach that leverages Africa’s rich traditions of deliberation and accountability, while adapting to the complexities of the digital and AI age. Ultimately, the brief serves as a roadmap for policymakers and stakeholders to foster a democratic culture rooted in informed participation, ethical journalism and inclusive civic engagement across all 55 AU member states.
This policy brief emerges from the inaugural roundtable held in Nairobi in May 2025, convened by the African Union (AU) in partnership with International IDEA and the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa.
