AI is poised to significantly transform electoral processes across the SADC region through improved efficiency, inclusivity, and transparency, among other things. On the other hand, these transformations are accompanied by potential risks that could undermine electoral processes and democratic consolidation. Some of these risks include mis- and dis-information, cyberattacks and algorithmic bias. As such, intended primarily for policymakers and EMBs, this paper, therefore, proposes concrete recommendations to effectively harness AI in elections. It calls on EMBs and SADC Member States to strengthen their legal and policy frameworks, invest in cybersecurity and digital infrastructure, build institutional and technical capacity, and promote regional cooperation.
