Improving the Resilience of Democracy in Central America

Mejorando la resiliencia democrática en Centroamérica
Democracy in Central America, particularly in the northern region, is at a critical juncture. It is difficult to find another region in the world with such a pronounced process of democratic erosion: of the six countries that make up Central America, four have experienced democratic backsliding, either degenerating into hybrid regimes or authoritarian governments, according to the Global State of Democracy report.

Improving the Resilience of Democracy in Central America aims to strengthen the capacities and initiatives of civil society organizations and media outlets in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, with a special focus on youth and women, in defense of democracy.

Democracy not only needs free and fair elections, but also active civil society organizations that foster participation and dialogue across the main divisions of society, and a free press that disseminates evidence-based information as a foundation for dialogue and deliberation.

This project is funded by the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Some of the activities carried out in 2025 by the project include a mapping of actors that allows us to strengthen relationships with civil society organizations and media; in addition to a directory of organizations that work for the protection of journalists in Latin America; and the "We Choose" (Elegimos) campaign, around International Human Rights Day, which seeks to recognize the work of journalists today.
