International IDEA is saddened by the passing of the prominent political scientist Leonardo Morlino

International IDEA mourns the passing of Professor Leonardo Morlino (June 1947-June 2025), a towering figure in political science whose intellect and unwavering commitment to democracy were respected across the globe.

Professor Morlino will be remembered not only for his pioneering contributions to the concept of the quality of democracy but also for his intellectual generosity. His vital research on the crucial role of international actors in democratic transitions was foundational, and International IDEA was profoundly honored to benefit from his wisdom. His insights during pivotal collaborations, particularly in Latin America and during the Tunisian revolution, challenged our assumptions and permanently enriched our understanding of democratization movements. His legacy of inquiry and mentorship will endure.

We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and the countless colleagues who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.
