International IDEA hosts the Secretariat of iKNOW Politics
The International Knowledge Network of Women in Politics (iKNOW Politics iknowpolitics.org) is a joint project of International IDEA, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women).
iKNOW Politics is supported by a Steering Committee—composed of representatives of the four partner organizations—and a central Secretariat. In the spirit of rotation between partners, in January 2021 the Secretariat of the project transferred from UN Women in New York—its base from 2015 to 2020—to International IDEA in Stockholm, its new base for the next few years.
Created in 2007, iKNOW Politics provides a platform—available in Arabic, English, French and Spanish—that facilitates women’s access to resources and capacity-building materials on political participation and provides them with an online space to share experiences, network, and collaborate on issues of interest. The website also provides an opportunity to stay informed of global events and news related to women’s political participation globally and regionally with over 20,000 news and resources.
Users and partners recognize iKNOW Politics as a unique multi-lingual online tool serving women and men around the world as the go-to information and resource portal on a variety of issues related to women’s political participation and leadership, such as elections; parliaments; local government; political parties; violence against women in politics; youth political participation; and women, peace, and security.
In 2020, the iKNOW Politics platform was visited by more than 300,000 users from all countries. On social media, it collected nearly 1.8 million impressions across platforms. Women and people aged 18 to 34 make up two-thirds of the platform’s visitors.
