Directory of organizations working to protect journalists in Latin America

The 2025 State of Democracy Report reveals a clear decline in press freedom and freedom of expression, fundamental pillars of the democratic system. This reality weakens the professional performance of journalists in general, but particularly in environments where other erosions of freedoms are evident. It is increasingly difficult for the press to operate according to principles of objectivity and transparency, especially in countries where media oversight is persecuted and penalized.

Within the framework of the project "Improving the Resilience of Democracy in Central America," implemented in Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, International IDEA has developed platforms that contribute to the debate and strengthen the capacities of civil society organizations and the press.

Aligned with the Allies for Democracy training program, a regional initiative aimed at strengthening democratic resilience in Central America, implemented throughout 2025, the tool was developed in collaboration with the project's partner organizations. This resulted in a comprehensive directory of organizations that support journalists through training, organizational development, scholarships, and protection platforms in cases of persecution and exile.

The directory provides an inventory of associations, organizations, and specialists offering a range of support services for journalists—a powerful tool for strengthening the work of the press, particularly in complex and challenging environments for the democratic system.

The tool was developed thanks to a contribution from the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and was presented during the Regional Meeting on Electoral Integrity, Disinformation, and Digital Gender-Based Political Violence. The directory was also presented in Peru during the Journalism and Politics course, "Electoral Coverage and Verification Lab," offered to a group of 22 journalists from the country.

It is a dynamic, easily accessible, and user-friendly document that serves as a toolbox for finding solutions in situations that prevent the free exercise of journalism.
