ADDIS ABABA - As part of their ongoing efforts to support the consolidation of sustainable democracy in Africa, the African Union Commission (AUC), the International Organization of La Francophonie (IOF) and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) are jointly organizing a technical workshop on “Civil Registration and Elections in Africa” in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from September 29 to 1 October 2016.

The event will bring together around one hundred participants from over 40 countries in Africa, the Americas and Europe including leaders of electoral management bodies, government officials responsible for civil registration, heads of government institutions and parliamentarians, technical experts and representatives of international, regional and sub-regional organizations.  The workshop aims to explore best practices in strengthening civil registries on the continent, which in the short, mid- and long-term could facilitate the identification of persons eligible to vote in elections.

The two-day workshop, which will feature six thematic panels complemented by practical training scheduled for 1 October, will enable participants to delve into the technical requirements and challenges of strengthening civil registration systems in conjunction with electoral administrators responsible for establishing and maintaining accurate, reliable voters rolls. Through this exchange of diverse experiences and by capitalizing on lessons learned over the past couple of decades, it is hoped that officials at the workshop will contribute to creating a ‘new dynamic’ and advocate for appropriate policies and reforms to strengthen civil registration systems in their own countries.

Through this initiative, the AUC, the IOF and International IDEA are combining and coordinating their efforts in support of the continued consolidation of civil registration systems across the African continent.
