On Wednesday 27 June 2018, International IDEA will co-organize an international roundtable on “The Constitutional Principles of Legislative Activities in Ukraine”. The event follows on from the recent International IDEA publication and event on “Semi-presidentialism and Inclusive Governance in Ukraine”. The roundtable, which will be held in the Ukrainian Parliament (Verkhovna Rada), will focus on the key constitutional conditions for the performance of the Ukrainian Parliament’s legislative, constitutive and supervisory functions. It will develop recommendations to ensure a sustainable interaction and interdependence of the different branches of Ukraine’s government.

The roundtable will discuss the following issues:

  1. The Parliament’s role in the formation of Government;
  2. The role of extra-parliamentary institutions in the legislative process;
  3. Parliamentary oversight of the Executive.

All key stakeholders from the government, as well as Ukraine’s main civil society organizations in the area of constitution building, are expected to participate in this event. National and international experts will be presenting on the issues. International IDEA’s Constitution Building Programme will present examples not just of how different countries have organized the role of parliament in their constitution, but especially the do’s and don’ts when reforming their existing system.
