Report Launch: Enablers and Incentives of Election-Related Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference in North Macedonia
The report Enablers and Incentives of Election-Related Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference in North Macedonia provides a comprehensive analysis of the enablers and incentives driving foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI) in North Macedonia. The report, drafted by the Metamorphosis Foundation, in collaboration with International IDEA and supported by Global Affairs Canada, applies the global methodology developed by International IDEA, adapted to North Macedonia's specific political, social, and media landscape.
Despite its commitment to democratic reforms and European Union integration, the country remains vulnerable to systemic corruption, political polarization, ethnic divisions, and regulatory gaps. These factors, combined with a fragmented media landscape and exploitability of digital platforms, have created fertile ground for coordinated disinformation campaigns aligned with foreign strategic interests. As recent elections have highlighted, addressing these challenges is critical to safeguarding its democratic resilience and public trust.
This event aims to foster a focused dialogue among experts, policymakers, and civil society representatives to address the vulnerabilities identified in the report. By examining the structural, social, and technological factors that enable FIMI, the discussion will explore actionable strategies to strengthen democratic resilience, improve media integrity, and build a trustworthy information ecosystem. The insights shared during this event will contribute to shaping a coordinated, whole-of-society approach to mitigating the impact of FIMI in North Macedonia and beyond.
