Reimagining Democracy in Asia

International IDEA will host a mini-workshop entitled “Reimagining Democracy in Asia: Addressing the Threat of Backsliding” on the sidelines of the International Civil Society Week in Bangkok, Thailand. The workshop will take place on 3 November 2025.

This timely event will bring together civil society activists from 11 countries across Asia and Africa, creating a dynamic space for cross-regional dialogue and collaboration. While each country’s road to democracy is unique, the workshop will emphasize the value of comparative experiences, fostering shared learning, generating innovative ideas, and exploring actionable strategies for strengthening democratic resilience.

Participants will engage with key insights from two of International IDEA’s publications:

•    Designing Resistance: Lessons Learned for Institutional Design from Backsliding (2023)
•    Designing Resilient Institutions: Countering Democratic Backsliding in Asia (2025)

Through interactive discussions and knowledge exchange, the workshop aims to deepen understanding of democratic backsliding and inspire practical approaches to counter it across diverse political contexts. It also seeks to lay the groundwork for more comprehensive discussions during a larger and extended workshop in May 2026.
