International IDEA, in collaboration with the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC), through the EU funded Strengthening pan-African capacities for electoral observation and assistance (SPEC) project is pleased to announce the Africa Regional Workshop on Protecting Elections in the Information Environment, scheduled to take place from 26 to 28 August 2025 in Abuja, Nigeria.

This workshop comes at a critical time, as electoral processes across Africa face mounting challenges in navigating the digital information environment. From misinformation and disinformation to targeted reputational attacks, Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs) must now operate not only at the technical level, but also at the level of public perception where trust in institutions and democratic processes is often won or lost. This regional workshop will provide a platform for constructive dialogue, peer learning, and collaborative strategy development to strengthen election integrity in this evolving landscape.

Approximately 25 participants are expected to attend, including representatives from Electoral Management Bodies (particularly from countries holding elections in late 2025 and 2026), Regional Economic Communities and EMB Networks. The workshop aims to foster a shared understanding of common risks related to the information environment around elections and to explore effective countermeasures and multi-stakeholder strategies tailored to each country's specific context. Participants will also be introduced to International IDEA’s methodology for protecting electoral processes in the information environment, allowing them to evaluate its relevance and potential application within their national systems. Additionally, the workshop will explore how EMBs can leverage societal partnerships—with civil society, academia, and other opinion influencers to counter harmful narratives and build public confidence in electoral outcomes.

The workshop will produce a summary report capturing regional trends, lessons learned, and emerging practices that can support future knowledge sharing and action. Participants will also have the opportunity to access a dedicated e-learning module to explore further key themes discussed during the event.
