Constitutional Governance and Rule of Law
Thought Leadership and Convening Networks
International IDEA works at the centre of this global context. Through a robust network of constitution-building practitioners and academic experts, we foster cross-regional learning that strengthens democratic and constitutional practices worldwide. We also recognize the importance of regional networks, where geographical neighbours can engage in deeper, contextually grounded exchanges that reflect shared histories, cultures, and challenges.
Regional networks supported by International IDEA:
- African Network of Constitutional Lawyers – An association of judges, lawyers, academics, activists, NGOs, research or academic institutes and bar associations that are interested in constitutional law and the development of constitutionalism across Africa.
- The Arab Association of Constitutional Lawyers – The first regional network of constitutional experts in the Middle East and North Africa, promoting dialogue and collaboration across the region.
- The Melbourne Forum – Jointly organized with the Constitution Transformation Network, this annual gathering brings together practitioners and scholars from across Asia and the Pacific to share lessons related to constitutional transformation
- European Eastern Partnership Network for Strengthening Constitutional Democracy – A nascent network of practitioners and scholars from Armenia, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, which meet annually to exchange experiences and co-produce knowledge resources.
Beyond Networks: Convening Global and Regional Dialogues
In addition to supporting formal networks, International IDEA regularly convenes and facilitates high-level meetings where international actors, national experts, constitution-makers and civil society representatives can learn from one another.
Convenings include:
- The Annual Edinburgh Dialogues on Post-Conflict Constitution Building – A global platform bringing together experts and practitioners from the fields of constitution-building, conflict mediation and peacebuilding.
- The Women Constitution Makers’ Forum – An annual gathering of women constitution-makers involved in current and past processes, providing a unique space for peer support, mentorship, and comparative exchange.
