The people of Guatemala elected President Bernardo Arévalo in the 20 August 2023 elections, which were widely observed and validated by the international community. His mandate is legitimate and indisputable.
International IDEA calls upon institutional actors — especially oversight and countervailing institutions— to act with responsibility, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law and democratic principles. It is vital that these institutions carry out their functions guided by the pursuit of the common good and respect for the mandate of the primary constituent, the Guatemalan people.
In this context, we encourage all national actors to safeguard democracy and maintain a constructive dialogue aimed at preserving constitutional order and promoting the strengthening of an independent, inclusive, and public-interest-oriented justice system.
