This milestone formalizes IDEA’s relationship with—and presence in—Fiji, and deepens our longstanding partnership with the Government of Fiji and its civil society. The agreement strengthens the foundation for expanded collaboration on electoral assistance, constitutional support, and civic education in Fiji.
Prior to the signing, Leena Rikkilä Tamang said, “I wish to express our deepest gratitude to the Government of Fiji for its steadfast commitment to democratic governance. Fiji has long demonstrated leadership in inclusive political participation, democratic institution-building, and regional cooperation. By hosting International IDEA, Fiji once again steps forward— not only as a national champion of democracy but as a regional leader, helping shape deeper democratic engagement across the Pacific.”
As Fiji and the wider Blue Pacific region navigate democratic and development changes, this new phase of cooperation will ensure we can work even more closely, in lockstep, with local partners to support institutional resilience and inclusive political participation.
Speaking at the signing, Hon. Siromi Turaga, Minister for Justice and Acting Attorney General of the Republic of Fiji, said, “Today marks a significant milestone in Fiji’s ongoing journey to strengthen democratic governance, uphold the rule of law, and advance open and inclusive political processes that reflect the aspirations of our people.”
He also noted, “… the collaboration and close work Fiji and International IDEA have undertaken making today’s ceremony a landmark and testament of Fiji’s commitment to the rule of law, human rights, and democratic pluralism.”
The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice, the Fijian Election Office, senior government officials, Fiji media, the Indian High Commission in Fiji, the British High Commission in Fiji, the German Embassy in Fiji, the Indonesian Embassy, the Malaysian Embassy in Fiji and the Embassy of Spain of Fiji.
