International IDEA and France strengthen their partnership in support of global democracy
STOCKHOLM – The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) welcomes the strengthening of its partnership with France in support of democracy worldwide, with France’s new 200 000 EUR core funding for the Institute formally delivered on Thursday by Thierry Carlier, the Ambassador of France to Sweden.
France has been a Member State of International IDEA since 2023 and is an important contributor to the Institute’s work to protect and advance democracy, especially through support to electoral processes in Ukraine, Moldova, and Gabon. Recognizing the high value and impact of the partnership, France is also supporting the second phase of the Institute's global programme to protect election integrity.
“France’s partnership with International IDEA reflects our shared commitment to supporting elections and other democratic processes in a challenging global context,” said Dr. Kevin Casas-Zamora, Secretary-General of International IDEA. “We value the deepening of France’s collaboration, particularly with our work in Ukraine, and look forward to advancing our joint efforts to strengthen resilient and inclusive democracies.”
France is also supporting International IDEA in its endeavour to reinforce the role of democracy as a strategic enabler within the European Union’s external policy, particularly amid preparations for the European Union’s next Multiannual Financial Framework.
"The defense of democracy is at the forefront of global priority issues for France, and the partnership with International IDEA is fundamental in this regard, in a context of widespread democratic decline,” said Ambassador Thierry Carlier. “International IDEA, which brings together a wide range of member states, is an invaluable platform at a time when multilateralism is under threat and the challenges we face are increasingly global and require shared responses".
