International IDEA commends the people of Sweden, the Swedish Election Authority, and all Swedish political parties for the electoral campaign culminating in yesterday’s national election. The comparatively high turnout and efficient conduct of the voting process across the country is a tribute to Sweden’s robust and vibrant democracy.
For many people around the world, Sweden is a reference point for democracy. Sweden’s strong cross-party tradition of peaceful democratic governance, free elections, and parliamentary oversight has inspired citizens, civil society, and governments. Sweden’s longstanding support to democracy has contributed directly to strengthening stability, security, and resilience globally.
As the eight political parties negotiate their positions and partnerships in the coming days, they have an outstanding opportunity to reinforce the place of democracy in the national policy agenda as a pillar of society at home, a core tenet of foreign and international cooperation policy, and an asset to Sweden’s national security and prosperity objectives.
International IDEA is proud to have been founded in Sweden more than 30 years ago, on the initiative of a cross-party coalition and in partnership with democracies from around the world. Headquartered in Stockholm since 1995, the Institute is proud to work closely with the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the Swedish Election Authority, and partners in Sweden’s government and civil society to support democracy all over the world.
