Elections in the Republic of Benin: A call to return to democratic norms

April 21, 2026

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) commends the Republic of Benin, one of its Member States, for elections that culminated in a peaceful transition of power. On 11 January and 12 April 2026, citizens of the Republic of Benin elected Members of Parliament and the President respectively.

International IDEA notes the tense environment ahead of the elections, characterized by contested reforms, detention of opposition leaders and civil society actors, and an attempted coup. These developments, coupled with the emergence of a one-party parliament, reflect an ongoing need for efforts to enhance political dialogue and social cohesion, re-open civic space and return the country to a path of peaceful co-existence and democratic governance.

Whilst commending the people of Benin for their political engagement, International IDEA is concerned by the continued incarceration of opposition figures and urges the new elected government to release them. The Institute calls on the ruling coalition to initiate robust confidence-building measures, including national dialogues for political reforms, to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive return to democratic order, the rule of law and fundamental freedoms.
