United Nations Launches Book Series on Decentralization and Democratic Local Governance

November 19, 2014

Scholars in the fields of local democracy, decentralization and good governance will gather today to discuss tools and mechanisms featured in two new publications: The Imperative of Good Local Governance: Challenges for the Next Decade of Decentralization and Democratic Local Governance: Reforms and Innovations in Local Democracy in Asia. The books, published by United Nations University Press, are based on research seminars organized by the Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD) and East West Center.

The event is co-hosted by International IDEA, the ICLD and the East West Center with introductions from International IDEA Permanent Observer to the UN Massimo Tommasoli and Acting Secretary-General and Chairperson of ICLD Jerker Stattin.

The dialogue complements a recent workshop held at IDEA headquarters on “Local democracy today and tomorrow - Learning from global knowledge and practices”, where more than 30 scholars and practitioners came together to explore recent trends in participation and local democracy.
