Today’s Event at UN Headquarters: Obligations and Standards: Towards Developing a Common Language for Electoral Integrity

October 28, 2014

International IDEA and The Carter Center, in collaboration with the Electoral Assistance Division of the UN Department of Political Affairs, have co-organized a launch of two publications on obligations and standards for assessing electoral integrity. This event will take place Tuesday, 28 October 2014 from 12:00 to 14:00 at UN Headquarters.

International IDEA Secretary-General Yves Leterme will discuss the new International IDEA publication “International Obligations for Elections: Guidelines for Legal Frameworks.”  The handbook outlines UN treaty law and jurisprudence relevant for both electoral management bodies and national legislators alike, with a focus on strengthening the implementation of electoral processes and ways to bolster national ownership and the integrity of electoral processes worldwide.

The event also will see the launch of The Carter Center’s manual “Election Obligations and Standards: A Carter Center Assessment Manual,” a companion to the Election Obligations and Standards database, which draws on more than 200 sources of international and regional law to guide electoral assessments. Representatives from International IDEA, The Carter Center, and the UN will be joined by Justice MarÍa del Carmen Alanis Figueroa from the Federal Electoral Court of Mexico.
