International IDEA is a strong advocate for the inclusion of democracy both as a goal in its own right and as an enabler in the post-2015 Development Agenda, and is hosting an Inter-Regional Dialogue on Democracy (IRDD) workshop on 17–18 June to encourage inter-regional discussion and knowledge sharing on this issue.

The workshop will discuss lessons learned by regional organizations in managing the interplay between sustainable development, the principles of democracy and their relevance in the establishment of the post-2015 Development Agenda.

“Regional organizations are among the stakeholders of this process. As key actors in the promotion of both development and democracy, regional organizations are positioned to play a significant role in the realization of these new development goals,” says International IDEA Secretary-General Yves Leterme.

The IRDD brings together senior officials from the African Union, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Council of Europe (CoE), the European Commission, the League of Arab States, the Organization of American States, the Pacific Islands Forum, and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). International IDEA is the facilitator and host of the full-time secretariat.

This is the first time that the Council of Europe formally attends the Inter-Regional Dialogue on Democracy as a participating organization. Active in promoting democracy and human rights, the Council of Europe joined the IRDD in March 2014.
