Champion of democracy, Surin Pitsuwan, passes

November 30, 2017
Surin Pitsuwan served as the Chair of International IDEA's Board of Advisers since 2014 and as a member of the Board since 2013.

It is with profound sadness that International IDEA reflects on the unexpected passing of Surin Pitsuwan. We express our sincere condolences to his family.

He served as Thailand's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1997–2001, and as Secretary-General of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), from 2008–2012. Pitsuwan held a key role in the political history of his country and his region.

Pitsuwan was also a great and very valued contributor to the work of International IDEA. He served as a member of the Board of Advisers since 2013, and as the Chair of the Board since 2014.

His enthusiasm and passion for democracy will be remembered by all those who crossed his path during these years. He will also be remembered for his consistent, and deeply held respect for everyone’s opinions.

Pitsuwan was a true champion of democracy and will be sorely missed.
