International IDEA’s Africa and West Asia Programme (IDEA-AWA) in partnership with the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), is convening a high level panel on 'Political parties and natural resource governance: building capacities for a developmental approach'.

The event, which takes place in the margins of the Investing in African Mining Indaba, aims to provide a platform for collective reflection and consensus building among invited participants which include African leaders and decision makers from political parties, civil society, business and academia. Participants will exchange ideas and experiences on the role of political parties in natural resource governance in order to explore ways of optimising profits from natural resources; ensuring their equitable distribution among citizens in order to enhance prospects for sustainable socioeconomic transformation.

This panel, which is part of International IDEA’s Regional Dialogue Series, builds upon the technical training workshop on inter-party dialogue, natural resources governance and socio- economic transformation of central African countries, which was conducted in December 2016 in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo by IDEA-AWA and ACBF. The panel is expected to contribute to efforts aimed at enhancing Africa’s political parties` awareness about a new developmental approach to natural resource governance. More specifically, the panel aims to discuss the modalities of strengthening the capacities of political parties to conduct their agenda setters and oversight roles in the development and implementation of this African owned innovative policy which aims to put citizens and socioeconomic transformation of the countries of the continent at the center of the of natural resources governance process in order to achieve the objectives of the first ten year implementation plan of the agenda 2063.
