Expert talk: Bruce Stokes on public attitudes and the state of US democracy

Join us for a discussion with Bruce Stokes (Director of Global Attitudes, Pew Research Center), where he will connect his research on public attitudes to data from International IDEA’s Global State of Democracy indices.

Focusing on the US, Stokes will outline the current opportunities and challenges facing democracy in the US. For this, he will also draw on the Global State of Democracy indices' new data that shows statistically significant declines in several dimensions of US democracy in the last few years, such as Impartial Administration, Clean Elections, Civil Liberties, Absence of Corruption, Effective Parliament, and Freedom of Expression.

Bruce Stokes is director of global economic attitudes at Pew Research Center, where he assesses public views about economic conditions, foreign policy and values. He is also a non-resident fellow at the German Marshall Fund and an associate fellow at Chatham House. He is the former international economics correspondent for the National Journal, a former senior transatlantic fellow at the German Marshall Fund and a former senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, where he is a member.

The Global State of Democracy indices depicts democratic trends at the country, regional and global levels across a broad range of different attributes of democracy from 1975 until 2017. The indices produce data for 155 countries and are updated annually. They are composed of indicators from V-Dem and other sources. The database is publicly available on International IDEA’s website and aims to inform research and strategies of those working on democratic reform at the national, regional and global level.
