In Peru, citizens perceive that their elected authorities are disconnected from citizen interest. This representation gap is exacerbated by major corruption scandals and political crises that occur constantly at all levels of government.
Consolidation of Peruvian Democracy
In recent years, Peru has implemented various changes in its rules of political representation, responding, among others, to the recommendations of the electoral observation missions of the European Union in 2016, 2020 and 2021. These changes include legislation to guarantee selection processes of more democratic candidacies, promoting gender parity and alternation in lists, as well as additional mechanisms to increase transparency and control of political financing.
Consolidation of Paraguayan democracy II
The Consolidation of Paraguayan Democracy II project has been implemented by International IDEA since 2019, with the support of the European Union. Its specific objectives are i) to support the strengthening of electoral integrity; and, ii) the increase in political representation and the participation of women, underrepresented groups and civil society, taking as reference the recommendations of the EU Electoral Observation Mission (MOE 2018). Global Democracy Coalition
The Global Democracy Coalition was formed in 2021, convened by International IDEA and other democracy organizations from around the world to advance and protect democracy worldwide and to influence the Summits for Democracy.
Support to the Chilean Congress for a more transparent, inclusive, receptive and responsible legislative exercise
International IDEA, with funding from the European Union, implements a cooperation project with the National Congress of Chile that seeks to strengthen representative democracy through the exchange of experiences with European parliaments and technical support to the legislative power. Renewed until March 2026, the main aim of the project is to contribute to a more transparent, inclusive, responsive, and accountable legislative exercise.
African Union Conflict and Governance Programme
International IDEA Africa and West Asia Programme has signed memorandum of understanding with the African Union Commission (AUC) to support peace and good governance in Africa. It was signed on 20 February 2023 by H.E. Ambassador Bankole Adeoy, African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security and International IDEA Regional Director for Africa and West Asia, Roba Sharamo.
Sierra Leone Democracy Strengthening Project (SLDSP)
