Democracy in Central America, particularly in the northern region, is at a critical juncture. It is difficult to find another region in the world with such a pronounced process of democratic erosion: of the six countries that make up Central America, four have experienced democratic backsliding, either degenerating into hybrid regimes or authoritarian governments, according to the Global State of Democracy report.
