International IDEA, alongside our local partners SUNGO (Samoa Umbrella for Non-Governmental Organisations) and WIBDI (Women in Business Development Inc), are delighted to announce the signing of two successful grant applications as part of the EU-Funded Initiative on Empowerment of Civil Society in Democratic Samoa (IOE SAMOA). Representatives from the Samoa National Youth Council and the Samoa Business Hub signed the agreement at SUNGO’s headquarters in Vaitele Tai, on Friday 8 August.
The signing marks the official commencement of the project’s collaboration with both organisations, in support of IOE Samoa’s commitment to strengthening civil society participating in Samoa’s democracy.
Welcoming partners to the signing, Programme team leader Faapito Opetaia said,
“We have come to the important part of this partnership to mark the line of implementation phase of our plan. We are privileged to acknowledge the continuous support of our International IDEA to have accessed to this small grant to enhance our community engagement and participation.”
A vibrant civil society is essential to a healthy democracy. The newly signed partnership brings together community organisations and public institutions to help empower Samoan citizens to understand better and exercise their rights. This landmark occasion highlights the dedication of Samoa’s civil society to advancing democratic participation, promoting human rights, and supporting inclusive development. The signing ceremony marked the launch of important initiatives to be implemented by local organisations under the IOE Samoa Grant Fund.
The wider IOE Samoa project reflects a shared commitment to inclusive governance and the principles of democracy, the rule of law, and sustainable development. The programme is made possible through the continued support and partnership of the European Union.
